FIRST THOUGHT: The Perfect Snack Pairing

Hey, ladies, do you like to snack in front of the TV? Who doesn’t, right? Should you want to amp up your snacking during your next binge-watching excursion, Mashable has you covered, offering up the perfect snacks to pair with today’s hottest TV shows. Here are a few of my favorites: Grab your British crisps and lollies for Game of Thrones so you can self-soothe during the Red Wedding. If The Bachelorette is your jam, tap a box of rosé, and if they’re doing one of those outdoor dates, make sure to include some beef jerky. Feeling cheeky during The Affair? Shake up a martini, shuck some oysters and get your sultry graze on. It’s time for an aphrodisiac snack!

WOMEN IN NUMBERS: More Than $32 Billion

OK, so we all love to snack, whether it’s while watching our favorite shows, while on a hike or while waiting in line at the DMV. But if you’re one woman who is opting for healthier snacks these days, you’re not alone. Growing awareness about healthy snacks and the increased availability of wholesome grab-and-go options are propelling that market to new heights. According to a new report from Grand View Research, the healthy-snack market will be worth more than $32 billion by 2025, with the nuts-and-seeds and dried-fruit segments expected to account for more than 27 percent of global market share.

WOMAN TO WATCH: Poorvi Patodia, Founder and CEO of Biena Snacks

Today, we’re highlighting one woman who started a small company with a big mission and is changing the way Americans snack, for the better. Like most of us, Poorvi Patodia enjoys a tasty between-meal nibble. But when she was pregnant with her first child, she went on the hunt for a healthier option to satisfy her hankerings. Remembering one of her favorite childhood snacks, chickpeas, Poorvi started experimenting in her kitchen, developing a super-smart way to roast chickpeas that keeps them light and crispy but still packed with the protein, fiber and nutrients of whole chickpeas.

Hooked on her chickpea idea, Poorvi turned her kitchen experiment into a thriving business, Biena Snacks, which offers a variety of flavored chickpeas, from classics like sea salt and cinnamon to bolder seasonings like sour cream and onion, barbecue and habanero. Yowza! Biena Snacks even offers sweeter versions that are undeniably snack-worthy. Hello, chocolate-covered salted-caramel chickpeas!

Though the health-snack market is booming these days, Poorvi launched her company in 2012, when the trend of plant-protein snacks was still up and coming. As a pioneer in the snack industry, Poorvi has received lots of acclaim. Her snacks are award-winning, and rightfully so. For instance, Prevention magazine selected Biena’s honey-roasted chickpeas for its Cleanest Packaged Foods awards list in 2016, and Cooking Light and Shape Magazine both noted Biena’s fiery habanero chickpeas were winners in the taste-test category. And in addition to being on the healthy and tasty sides of the snack spectrum, Biena’s chickpeas are also all-natural, contain no GMOs and are made from scratch in the United States.

Since Poorvi launched her delicious enterprise, the company has sold more than a billion chickpeas, which, I’m sure, were rapidly consumed. Indeed, Biena has become one of the fastest-growing snack brands in the country, with products available in more than 15,000 stores nationwide. Poorvi’s biz has grown by more than 800 percent in the past three years, and is likely to at least double its revenue in 2017. Not too shabby for a gal who was simply craving a more flavorful way to snack healthy!

QUITE THE QUOTE

Let’s keep things short and sweet (or salty), and send you off with a play on a classic British adage:

“Keep calm and snack on.”
