When you think of beer, you probably imagine bars and baseball games. But the sudsy stuff is much more ingrained in our culture than you might think. All the way back in the 5th century, it was mead, a honey-based beer-like beverage, that brought about the term “honeymoon.” Yep, seriously. Calendars revolved around lunar phases then, and during the first moon of a newlyweds’ marriage, the couple would indulge in the luscious honey beer. Sounds like the perfect way to start a lifelong adventure together, right? What interesting stories have you amassed—with or without your better half—from your personal history of sipping a pint—or three?
WOMEN IN NUMBERS: Nearly 80 Percent
While frat houses might have you believe beer comes in bulk and tastes offensive, the craft-beer movement is intently proving that long-held notion totally wrong. More Americans than ever are embracing the abundance and nuances of perfectly crafted specialty brews. In fact, according to the Brewers Association, as of 2016, there were 5,300 craft breweries in the country, a big jump from just 10 years previous. And better yet, almost 80 percent of adults in the United States live within 10 miles of a craft brewery. Holy hops!
WOMAN TO WATCH: Tanisha Robinson, CEO of BrewDog USA
If you fancy a pint with a Scottish influence, you’ll definitely want to check out today’s Woman to Watch. Tanisha Robinson is the CEO of the brand-new American headquarters of beloved Scottish craft brewer BrewDog. And she’s toasting her new position by planning to expand BrewDog’s U.S. presence far and wide in hopes of making the company top dog in the American craft-brew industry.
BrewDog, based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was founded in 2007 as a small-batch craft brewery with a lot of heart. And by 2008, the brewery got major buzz for creating and selling the strongest beer in the United Kingdom, a hoppy imperial stout called Tokyo that helped the company skyrocket to Scotland’s second-largest independent brewery in only its second year in business. Ten years later, BrewDog beers were available in 46 bars, the company employed more than 700 people and BrewDog set its sights on the land across the pond.
Today, BrewDog relies on Tanisha to manage its new American business out of Columbus, Ohio, where the company launched a state-of-the-art 100,000-square-foot brewery. From there, Tanisha is responsible for establishing the brand, sales strategy, operational growth and developing BrewDog’s American bar division.
Establishing such a robust presence in the land of the free and the home of great brew is no easy feat, but Tanisha, a seasoned entrepreneur and innovator, is certainly up for the challenge. Prior to working for BrewDog, she founded a successful design company called Print Syndicate, and co-founded TicketFire, a mobile app that revolutionized the way fans discover and experience live events.
Tanisha describes herself as a serial entrepreneur with a willingness to take risks for high rewards. While it’s a whole lot easier to simply pour yourself a beer and hope for the best, Tanisha says you don’t get results that way. Instead, it takes hard work, dedication and a specific focus on growing your business. Her advice: You’ve got to vet your product or service, elicit revenue quickly and hold yourself accountable for accomplishments and failures.
She’s learned much of this with experience, and says every day is another opportunity to discover new things, master new skills and, oh yeah, learn how to juggle the million items on every trailblazer’s to-do list. As Tanisha puts it, “It’s absolute mayhem, and I’m completely in my comfort zone.” Spoken like a true entrepreneurial authority. Cheers to that, Tanisha!
